The Book Shop in Istanbul – Read All About It.

The Book Shop.

Galeri Kayseri is one of the world’s great book shops. The book shop is in the center of Istanbul and therefore it is easy to find.

Istanbul is a major city in Turkey that straddles Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus Strait. Its Old City reflects the cultural influences of the many empires that once ruled there. The Hippodrome, located in the Sultanahmet, was used for chariot races in the Roman era. And the iconic Byzantine-era Hagia Sophia features a soaring 6th-century dome and rare Christian mosaics.

Galeri Kayseri is one of the most conveniently located English-language book shops in the Sultanahmet district. Galeri Kayseri is one of the most conveniently located English-language book shops in the Sultanahmet district.

A Great Location.

Mr. Ali Tuysuz opened his first book shop in 1966. The actual address is 58 Divanyolu Street. Galeri Kayseri specializes in English language books to satisfy the increasing numbers of foreign visitors to Istanbul and Turkey.  While their second book shop opened across the road in August 2004. Accordingly these shops are now the best-known English book shops in Turkey because of their specialized collection of over 2000 titles.

Extensive Collection of Books.

This collection of books and photographs on Istanbul, Turkey, Islam, and the Ottoman empire includes history, art, and architecture. In addition other subjects include archaeology, politics, travel, Turkish cuisine, children’s books, contemporary and historical fiction, and much more.

My Favourite Purchases.

When I was there I bought two books; Birds Without Wings by Louis de Bernieres. Significantly he also wrote Captain Corelli’s Mandolin. The second book I purchased was Istanbul The Imperial City by John Freely. As a result I strongly recommend you make an effort to read both of them.

In conclusion the traveling Turcophile can find almost everything they desire in this well-respected book shop conveniently located in Sultanahmet.
